Week Seven: Jacob and the Black Forest

Week Seven: Jacob and the Black Forest

What a week! Riding through the Black Forest in Germany has been incredible. It's easy to see how it inspired Grimms' fairytales, every turn offered up spectacular views – hauntingly dark woods, steep mountain passes, picturesque towns and fantastic castles. There were some challenges – and ticks…

Week Six: For Franc's Sake, You Have to Pay For Showers?!

Week Six: For Franc's Sake, You Have to Pay For Showers?!

Everyday’s a school day on our cycle tour, and this week especially, we feel like we’ve packed so much into our tired, little brains. So what did we learn…

Week Five: Family Friends, Flatmates & French Kindness

Week Five: Family Friends, Flatmates & French Kindness

We have been overwhelmed with kindness, generosity and real beds this week, as we were welcomed into the homes of an old flatmate of mine, a family friend of Dan’s, and a wonderful French family who flagged us down on the side of the road…

Week Four: Sunshine Brain

Week Four: Sunshine Brain

Minus the bloodthirsty mosquitoes, we started the week the best way possible: with two days' rest on a hot beach, supping beer and red wine. Embarrassingly, while in this sunny daze, we got totally and utterly lost on the way to the supermarket. A trip that should have taken one hour, ended up taking close to three…

How We Made £1,181.94 Through Cashback and Bonuses

How We Made £1,181.94 Through Cashback and Bonuses

Never in my life did I think I’d become one of these money savvy coupon queens. Dan’s always been good with money, but quite honestly, I’ve been dreadful. Credit cards can be devilish if you let them be. Once we started saving for the trip, however, that all changed very quickly .

So how did we make £1,181.94?...

Week Three: Too Much, Too Soon?

Week Three: Too Much, Too Soon?

What a week. We cycled everyday. That’s seven days of riding totalling 471 KM. Granted one day was only 20 KM, but it was still a lot of saddle time. After such a wet second week, we decided to change our route and head to the sunny French coast, making a deal with ourselves that we could have two days off once we hit the beach. In hindsight, yes it was too much, too soon.

By ride five, we were tired and grouchy with each other…

Week Two: A Complete Washout

Week Two: A Complete Washout

Week two was tough. It pretty much rained the whole time. Mix that with ‘0°C but feels like -4°C’ kind of temperatures, plus snow, and you've got a struggle on your hands.

We were definitely led under false pretences after the first week of suncream and t-shirt weather, so we were very unprepared...

Planning, Budgeting and Buying

Planning, Budgeting and Buying

Committing to a trip like this was easy. We didn’t need much convincing to quit our jobs, sell all of our stuff, and leave our secure lives in London. Planning a trip like this, on the other hand, was something neither of us had any real experience in doing...

The First Post

The First Post

I never thought I’d see Dan in a Middlesbrough shirt and I never thought we’d cycle to New Zealand. Yet Dan now owns one and we’re cycling to New Zealand next week. Next weekI still can't believe either.

Over the last couple of years, this trip has evolved from a simple, short backpacking adventure into an all-out, guns blazing 12- to 18-month cycle to the other side of the world. I’m still not quite sure how that happened, if I’m honest...
